They can be extremely loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud cries, which could be disruptive to those who live in condos or apartments.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged where to buy a macaw work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers.
