Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

bedside crib travel cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months old, at which point your baby is old enough to move to the crib.

MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model features a bassinet that can be lifted off to use in the home and an option to rock manually. It was also easy to assemble and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or a cot. Choosing the larger one is a good choice when you want your child to sleep in it until the age of approximately three.

MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved that the bedside cot was slightly larger than a Moses basket but not too large for her baby's room. It's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or calming and that the quality is excellent, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

It also comes with an option for inclining the reflux and a machine-washable breathable liner. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you don't need to buy a new mattress every time your baby grows. However, it requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the perfect mattress for your cot.

Height

When choosing a bedside cot, look for one that can be elevated to a level that is comfortable for you when feeding babies. It must also be able to be lowered down out of the way so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or soothing. This feature is particularly helpful in the event of recovering from a C-section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.

You should also think about the level you would like the bottom of your crib to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level and others prefer a higher elevation to give them greater stability. One of our mom testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with a collapsible side you can press at the press of the button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should not be used until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance typically around 6 months. This is due to the risk of being suffocated. It's also important to know that if you opt for a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib and vice versa, you must begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this to ensure that they don't climb out or fall out of bed.

Design

The more expensive options could include features such as a built-in night light and a calming centre that plays sounds and music and has two levels of vibrating to help soothe baby back to sleep, or an adjustable base that allows you to easily reach your baby for feedings. Certain models can be converted into an infant bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you take your baby to the crib and transfer them to the opposite side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from Caesareans, or those who need to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, stating that it was easy to use and made her baby much easier especially after a c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than the other cribs for bed that we've tested, but it folds into its bag for travel, making it compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She said it was designed to be used by parents and children. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly simple to operate and is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's pivoting base was a great idea because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to make access easier for moms who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety feature is that it can be easily raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or their nappy. This means that it's ideal for mothers who are still recovering from a C-section. It is recommended to choose an option that lets you lower the side of the bed with a simple button press. This will allow you to easily raise your child without having to get out of the bed. This is important, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You should also be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as duvets and pillows, which could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product that included gaps between the bedside crib travel cot sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents) and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing number of incidents where infants are trapped between a bedside rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers which can be converted to other types of use, such as play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be released in the month of November 2021.
