How to Replace an audi spare keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The audi car key is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of an Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi a3 key replacement because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission as well as the other car's components.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard component across the audi key programming keyless go; my review here, 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and audi a4 replacement key 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
